market mitts

The kids and I have a little Wednesday morning tradition of going to the farmers' market by the mall. It's the same every week: we visit three stands, all right next to each other at the end of one of the rows. First we go to the blue tent, where a man named Walter sells organic eggs and baked goods. He also has doughnuts for 50 cents apiece, covered in sugar and cinnamon. Anya nibbles at hers, sometimes finishing it, sometimes not. Daniel's doughnut is usually gone by the time we walk to the next stand where an Englishman sells a variety of peppers and the best goat cheese I've ever tasted: brie, camembert, feta, cheddar, bleu (my favorite is the camembert). He has a young son, too, so we spent a lot of time this summer chatting about potty training. Next to him is Cathy (or maybe she spells it with a "K," I'm just not sure), who sells all kinds of vegetables, several varieties of garlic, and a smattering of apples (including Honeycrisps! Joy!), none of which are sprayed. She shows particular interest in the kids, and lately she's made such a fuss over the sweaters I made for them, I decided to make her a little something to keep her hands warm:



Yesterday was chilly in the morning, so I kind of didn't want to give these up, but I did. I don't have to stand in the cool autumn air for six hours selling the season's last tomatoes, after all.



Pattern: Princess Mitts from The Knitter's Book of Yarn
Yarn: Sublime Angora Merino DK, 1 skein in denim blue. This yarn is so soft I kept rubbing it on my cheek.
Mods: I accidentally crossed all the middle cables one way, when they were supposed to alternate. It looked fine, so I reversed on the second mitt. Also, I didn't like the way 2x2 ribbing looked in the thumb gore increases, so I switched to plain st st for the increases, then went back to ribbing for the rest of the thumb.



No progress yet on making a needle case, sadly, but perhaps I'll get to that this weekend.
